Michael's Garden Offices

Do I need planning permission?  Planning permission is not required in 95% of cases, but if in doubt, please check with your local planning officer.  Planning is usually needed if:

  1. you are in a conservation area;

  2. the building is more than 4m high;

  3. the building is forward of the forward building line - ie, in your front garden, not your back;

  4. the building is less than 5m from your main house; and

  5. the area occupied by the building is more than 50% of your garden area.

Who am I?  I am a fully qualified carpenter and joiner, who has worked on various high quality projects, including the Paxton House in Primrose Hill for five years.  My wife and I run our business together - I make the garden offices, and Lucy keeps the office running smoothly.  I live in Dorset, and will travel (if it is commutable).  I also take on project work in the South East London area.

How long does your garden building take to make?  Creating your garden building takes between 2 to 4 weeks from start (preparing the concrete base) to finish (moving in).  Discussions beforehand are essential to talk through your specifications on finishes, fixtures and fittings, as well as style of building.
